...may I strongly suggest buying the first volume of esteemed author Geoff Armstrong's Spirit of the Red V, the definitive history of St George's 100 years of existence

Andrew Webster (SMH 21/08/21)

Through talented author Geoff Armstrong, the Dragons are about to release a two-volume history of the club called Spirit of the Red V, to celebrate its 100th season. Volume 1 has just landed on my desk and its hard to describe how impressive it is

ST GEORGE DRLFC

St George DRLFC joined the top flight of Rugby League when the club was admitted to the NSWRL competition in 1921 and played its inaugural match against Glebe, being narrowly beaten 4-3. St George Dragonslayers (as they were known then) was led by Herb Gilbert and the first points scored came from a try to George Carstairs.

Who knew that 100 years later that the instantly recognisable Red V would be one of the most iconic brands in Australian sport. With five rugby leagues Immortals and a record 11 straight premierships, the Red V has forged a unique place in history. The club is now a shareholder of the St George Illawarra Dragons where the Red V continues to be a force in elite rugby league.

The club fosters junior rugby league through its nine local clubs and plays in the Harold Matthews Cup, S G Ball and Tarsha Gale Cup junior representative competitions.
